Special Services Department
 
The Petal School District Special Services Department is responsible for all student educational needs relating to the areas of Special EducationSection 504and Gifted Education
 
Special Education serves children ages 3-21 in a continuum of services at each grade level and school. The special education department has 49 teachers and 6 speech language pathologists serving about 650 students. Services include inclusion, tutorial, resource, self contained, community-based programs, district severe profound program, day treatment classes/programs, behavior classes, developmentally delayed preschool program, multi-disabled class, developmentally delayed K-2 classes, and homebound services. The high school offers three diploma options for special needs students: high school diploma, Mississippi Occupational Diploma , and a certificate of attendance.  The middle school and the high school have a behavioral health counselor who offers individual and group counseling. Meeting individual student needs is the goal for the special services department.

Section 504 plans are offered to eligible students.

Gifted Education programs are offered for grades 2-6 for eligible students. Petal has seven gifted teachers who service about 300 students. All first graders are screened for gifted eligibility and referrals can be made by teachers, parents, or students.
